Weekly Comments #14

I gotta say this was a pretty busy week for me. I had to race to just barely finish my 3-D competition, then I had to practice and then audition for Cinderella. Then I had to do callbacks for Cinderella. And Finally to top it all off I went to go see the Spongebob Movie which honestly was actually pretty good and also the highlight of my week. Really the downside this week was the 3-D competition having to be handed in, I just wish I had one more day and that I didn't rush the sounds or music in post, but I digress. That being said didn't learn much this week. The only thing I am looking forward to now at the moment is film I really can't wait to start that class, too bad I have to wait a year.

Here is the Link of the Week!
This is a video that I really loved. This sketch is greatly put together and has a great twist at the end. I hope you enjoy!

Serious Time #27 Once Upon a Time There was a Super Bowl...

The director of Disney's Maleficent, Robert Stromberg, has put a new twist on the classic fable on the tortoise and the hare. In this years Super Bowl a Mercedes Benz commercial aired something that people usually wouldn't expect from a car commercial, but this year was different. The commercial was a spin off on the tortoise and the hare where instead of the tortoise passing a sleeping rabbit he drove by a gambling one in a Mercedes Bens. Robert Stromberg says that once he heard that he would be working on a car commercial he right away went to the tortoise and the hare, which makes a lot of sense. It wasn't smooth ride though, Stromberg states two problems that they encountered. One of the problems was the fact that they had to animate these characters into the real world and then on top of that make these characters more human like and give them more personality, this process alone they say took 3 months. The other problem they faced was the weather, since the commercial wasn't all just animation they had to actually shoot in a forest in Oregon. For three days straight it rained it, it wasn't until the fourth day that they could actually shoot with clear weather. Even through these challenges though they still ended up making a great looking commercial.

This was an okay article for the most part. The reason being that while informative and a bit interesting, it was just too long. It isn't really long in general, it's just long for the subject it's on if that makes any sense. All I'm trying to say is how much do you need to know about a Super Bowl commercial. I just feel that there was a lot of useless info. in this article that could have been cut, but whatever. Even though I feel it was too long I did still think that it was interesting, I especially liked the part where they talk about the process of making the characters. Overall okay article.

Serious Time #26 Crowds For Days

Not everyone can get crowds of extras whenever they want, especially if on a small budget. Fear not though for there is a solution, and that solution is only a few cinematography tricks. Group everyone close together whenever you want the shot to feel more populated and dense. Another trick you can use is shooting with a long lens, this is a good way to create depth and give the illusion that the shot is more populated then it actually is. Also if you combine the first two tips then it will intensify the effect even more so. Another tiny effect is having people walk through the shot to give it more depth and liveliness. If you want to go for a more wide shot approach then you can try composting. This is a great way to create an illusion of a big crowd of people. The way this technique works is by shooting the same group of people walking in different areas of the shot and then in post compiling it all together. All of these tips and tricks are great ways to get a more populated shot.

I loved this article. This is mainly due to the fact that I've been wanting to know how indie movies did this for a long time. This seems like some great effects that I will definitely use in the future. I honestly have just noticed now that a lot of movies that I have seen used these effects, especially the long lens shot. This article was also informative and straight to the point which I also liked. This is relevant to the  video side of Digital Media. Overall useful article.
